ADVANCED: Set up Sales Taxes

Chances are your sales tax is already set up — we did that for you when you first opened your shop. But if you’ve moved, or you need to start collecting sales tax in another state, you can set that up yourself.

This is advanced, though — so if you have any questions or are in any way reluctant to mess with it yourself, please do contact us and we’ll get it sorted for you.

That said? If you want to give it a shot yourself — here’s how you do it.

This can get MAD COMPLICATED but I’m going to keep it simple for this tutorial. For most of us, the only time we should be charging sales tax for online sales is if our customer lives in the same state as we do (and if our home state indeed charges sales tax—I’m looking at you, Delaware!). So I will walk us through how to set that up, and the first thing I’m going to do is stop talking to us in the first person plural.

As with most everything else in this section of the tutorials, sales tax gets set up in Mal’s (https://www.mals-e.com/). Log in, and click on ‘Cart Setup’.

Click on the ‘Tax and Shipping’, then ‘Sales Tax’.

This will give you a long page with a bazillion options.

For this tutorial we will merrily ignore the vast majority of them. Instead, we will go with the presumption above. Say that your shop is physically located in Pennsylvania, where the sales tax is six percent.

Firstly you click on the radio button for ‘Tax will be calculated using one of the rates specified below.’

Scroll down to ‘Tax is based on the shipping address’ and select the radio button marked ‘sales tax should be added to my prices’.

Then choose the one below it, marked ‘6 – US States’.

For this example, fill in ‘6’ for the tax rate and choose ‘Pennsylvania’ for the state.

Scroll all the way down and hit ‘Submit Changes’, and you’re good to go.

If you need to set up your taxes another way and you can’t figure out how, contact us and we’ll help you get it squared away. And if you need to charge sales tax for some items and not others, fear not; there’s a tut for that (link once it’s done).
