How to Copy Items

If you’ve got a lot of similar items to enter — say, a 2-ounce candle that comes in five different scents — we’ve made it easy for you, with the ‘Copy to a new draft’ feature. There are two ways to do this.

The first is from within the ‘Edit Item’ page. Choose the item you want to duplicate and edit it. Once you’re on the ‘Edit Item page’, click on ‘Copy to a new draft’, which is in the ‘Publish’ box to the right.

The second is from the ‘Items’ page — hover over the item to be copied until the commands below it appear, and click ‘Duplicate’.

Either of these will create a new item with all of the attributes of the old one (save for one, which I’ll get into in a moment). Change it as you like — change the title, the pictures, the description, the tags, whatever — and publish it, and poof! You now have two similar items, without having to enter all the information both times.

Something I’ve run into many times, and it’s something to be careful of — be sure you’ve actually clicked on ‘Copy to a new draft’ before you start editing. Otherwise you (like me) will be changing the old item, and will just have to change it all back. There are two ways to tell if you’ve already clicked ‘Copy to a new draft’, in case you’ve lost track of what you’re doing and don’t remember:

The first is to check the Permalink, right under the Title. If you’ve already copied the item, it’ll have the name of the item just like previously, but the URL will have ‘-2′ appended to the end of it:

The second one only works if you (like me) usually add more than one ‘Additional Image’ under that field.

If you’ve already copied the item, that second image will disappear, and only the first will still be there:

Just a couple of hints in the hopes that you, unlike me, will remember to copy the item before you start messing with it.
