How to Add Categories
Your initial shop categories will be set up already when you get your Wicked Plum shop, but there will always be new categories to add. Holiday items — new lines — or perhaps you just want to emphasize a special you’ve got going. There are two ways to add a new category.
The first way makes sense if you’re adding several categories at once. You’ll start by clicking on ‘Categories and Tags’ on the left sidebar, and then ‘Categories’.
This will take you to the ‘Categories’ page.
Enter the name of your new category and, if you want, the ‘slug’, or the short version of the category name that’ll go in the URL. If you leave the slug blank it’ll fill one in for you.
Now, give your category a parent. Likely it’ll go under ‘Shop All Items’, but if you have, say, ‘Shop by Color’ or ‘Shop by Price’, it might need to go under one of those, depending on what kind of category it is. Let’s assume you’re adding a ‘Shop All Items’ sort of category:
That’ll put your new category in the right place, and ta-dah! You’re done.
The other way to add a category is on-the-fly, as you’re adding a new item (this will later link to the ‘adding a new item’ thing). On the ‘Add New Item’ page, scroll down to the categories dialog, and click on ‘+ Add New Category’.
Type your category name into the box, and give it a parent — in this case, let’s say that your new category is ‘Priced $1-3′, so its parent would be ‘Shop by Price’.
If you’ve got a holiday category — say you’ve made a category for Christmas specials — you don’t have to delete it after the sale is over. Just remove the category from any items that remain visible, or set them private, and the Christmas category won’t show in your shop until there are items in it again.
