A sticky post is a post that always appears at the top of your blog — your most recent post will always appear just below it.

Why would you want to do that, though? Don’t you want people reading your newest writings? There are reasons to do a sticky post, though.

  • You might have some static information you want any readers of your blog to see before they get buried in reading what you’ve written — perhaps links to frequently asked questions, your shop policies, or your retail locations.
  • Maybe you’ve written something you’re particularly proud of, and you want it displayed for all the world to see.
  • You’ve got a sale going — or a contest, or an upcoming event — and you don’t want it getting buried below other posts, at least until the sale is over.
  • Sticky posts can also help with SEO — the higher on the page your keywords appear, the higher they’ll rank. A keyword-rich sticky post (done right) can bring more people to your site.

To designate a particular blog post as ‘sticky’, go in and edit it (tut). Go to the ‘Publish’ box on the right side of the page. After ‘Visibility’, click on ‘Edit’.

Check the checkbox for ‘Stick this post to the front page’.

Click on ‘Update’, and the post will appear at the top of your blog.

To make the post not-sticky again — say the sale’s over — go back in and edit it, and uncheck ‘Stick this post to the front page’. Save it, and it’ll go back to its normal place in your blog.
