Dealing with Spam Comments

Sometimes you’ll get a comment moderation notification from someone you don’t know, saying something kinda irrelevant to your post, and with a link to some site selling Viagra or dubious weight-loss techniques. This is spam. We’ve all gotten it, we all know it when we see it, and ain’t nobody likes getting it.

You can ignore it, and it won’t get posted to your blog. But if you mark it as spam and block the address it comes from, that will help WP-SpamFree get better at blocking spam before you even see it.

There are two things you can do to help improve WP-SpamFree’s filters, and we recommend doing both for every spam comment you get. The first is to click on the link in the email that appears after after ‘Spam it:’.

This will take you to the ‘Moderate Comment’ page. Click on ‘Spam Comment’.

The comment will be marked as spam. It will not get posted to your blog, and WP-SpamFree will take note of it, for future reference.

The second thing that you can do is to block the IP address, so that even if the person commenting tries to post again from a different email address, they won’t be able to.

Back in the email, click on the link that appears after ‘Blacklist the IP Address’:

This will open up another window, one that simply notifies you that you’ve blocked the IP in question; you can safely close it. There’s nothing else you need to do.

Poof! You’ve struck a blow against spam. Give yourself a high-five—you’ve helped all humanity!
